About this Piece

Chip Inlay

Chip inlay is a jewellery technique whereby cavities are carved into silver and filled with a mixture of crushed natural stone; typically turquoise, coral or lapis and an epoxy resin. Once the resin has cooled and hardened, it is polished smooth. The technique is popular in both Mexican and Native American jewellery - the colour often vibrant and the layers of crushed stone give a nice depth.

Turquoise is a mineral that occurs when water containing elements like copper and aluminium leach through rock. It's vivid blue-green colour is decided by the level of elements, more copper produces a greener colour, more zinc a yellower tone. It is a porous stone so to keep it looking beautiful for a long time avoid temperature swings, chemicals, cosmetics, perfumes and ultrasonic cleaners.
