About this Piece

What is Heishi?

'Heishi' is the Santo Domingo word for 'shell'. The term refers to fine, hand rolled small disk beads made of shells, corals or ground and polished stones. The name and beads are made by the native Pueblo People of New Mexico in the RIo Grande pueblos.
