Mexican Vintage Jewellery

in stock

1930s - 40s Classic Vintage Mexican Silver Necklace

Lovely handcrafted sterling silver vintage necklace, handmade in Mexica c 1930s - 40s (prior to 1948) this is fourteen tinkling decorative links, hand made chain links and simple j clasp. If you prefer a longer necklace I would wear a sterling chain doubled at the back to the desired length. This is a hollow repoussé design so it is light and easy to wear but still a quality gauge of silver. Very finely crafted, lovely art deco vintage necklace. A piece to keep for a lifetime and an excellent example of early vintage Mexican silver jewellery.

About this Piece

High in the hills of southern Mexico is a small town named Taxco, rich in silver deposits with a history of mining and silver smithing, this town has produced some of the world's finest design and workmanship in vintage jewellery. The Mexican Revolution (a long and bloody civil war) ended in the 1930's leaving people and produce able to move freely for the first time in 30 years. American architect William Spratling, enamoured with the towns skills and resources, helps to reinvigorate the silver industry by creating silver design workshops, and exporting the produce, mostly to the United States. This little town became a hive of original design and expert craftsmanship attracting artisans and artists, like few other places and produced some of the worlds finest silver work for a 50 year period.

Repoussé is a metalworking is a metalworking technique in which a malleable metal is ornamented or shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create a raised design - the back usually flat finished.
